Prosthetic
Prosthetic is a performative prosthetic device that places a smartphone in front of the face.
The device, made of stainless steel, is structured around a support in which a smartphone is placed and is activated when the smartphone’s rear camera is switched on, transmitting the user’s face.
When installed on the body, it clearly expresses the existence of a relationship between subject-object. From the viewer’s position, we do not directly perceive the face of the wearer of the device, but we perceive the digitised image, and from the position of the user, reality is affected by the object that is only a few centimetres away from the face.
The work has a markedly performative character, requiring the participation of the body to be fully activated. The dividing line between the somatic and the virtual body is increasingly blurred. In our mediation with the digital devices, both bodies coexist and intermingle, giving rise to a relationship that requires skills we are still developing. We are clumsy in a field with which we are still familiarising ourselves, which is why the need arises to open up, in one way or another, a dialogue around it.
Do we look at each other’s faces or the pixels of our faces?
